Belt Testing in Newark, Ohio, Is About More Than Rank
At Impact Family Martial Arts in Newark, Ohio, belt testing is a meaningful measure of perseverance, growth, and commitment. More than 16 adult students stepped onto the mat for belt testing and successfully completed the requirements to advance to their next rank.
The testing lasted more than two and a half hours. It demanded physical effort, mental focus, and the willingness to continue when the process became difficult. Most importantly, the experience centered on perseverance, encouragement, family, and refusing to quit.
As the owner and an instructor, I was proud to watch each student work through the challenge. Belt testing is not about proving that a student is perfect. It is about showing that the student has continued to learn, train, and improve.
Process. Progress. Not perfection.
That message was visible throughout the testing. Every student arrived with a different history, a different level of experience, and a different reason for training. Each person faced the same challenge with determination and support from the people around them.

Students Train Like a Team and Become a Family
Impact Family Martial Arts is built around the belief that students should not have to take their journey alone. Students train like a team, and over time, they become a family.
That spirit was especially clear during this belt-testing week. Students encouraged one another, helped one another, and stayed connected through the most demanding parts of the testing process. The support on the mat showed that advancement is not only an individual accomplishment. It is also a reflection of the community that helps each student keep moving forward.
Training partners play an important role in martial arts. They help students practice techniques, build confidence, and learn how to remain focused under pressure. They also provide encouragement when training becomes tiring or frustrating.
The same values that guide regular classes were present during belt testing: discipline, humility, respect, and kindness. Students worked hard while continuing to support the people beside them.
That environment is one of the reasons families choose Impact Family Martial Arts. Martial arts training provides a structured setting where students can improve physically while also developing the character and confidence needed outside the dojo.
Families Learn and Grow Together
Family involvement is an important part of the Impact experience. Families train together in many different ways, including moms and dads training with their children and fathers and daughters learning side by side.
Parents do not have to remain on the sidelines as spectators. They can participate in the process, face challenges alongside their children, and experience the discipline and satisfaction that martial arts training provides.
When families train together, they have an opportunity to:
- Learn practical self-defense skills
- Develop confidence
- Get healthier
- Build discipline
- Strengthen parent-child relationships
- Encourage one another through challenges
Martial arts gives families a shared goal and a shared language for perseverance. Parents and children can talk about effort, consistency, and the importance of continuing after a difficult class or challenging test.
The experience also creates meaningful opportunities for parents to lead. Children benefit when parents provide clear encouragement, maintain appropriate authority, and help establish the expectation that commitments matter. A parent’s role is not simply to be a friend. Parents are authority figures who guide, support, and teach their children how to respond when something requires effort.
Training together allows parents to demonstrate those lessons rather than only explain them.
Ryan Fazekas Earns His First-Degree Black Belt
One of the most meaningful moments of the week was Ryan Fazekas earning his First-Degree Black Belt after training at Impact Family Martial Arts for more than five years.
Five-plus years of training represent much more than time spent attending classes. Ryan’s journey reflects consistency, patience, and the willingness to continue through the many stages of development that come before a black belt.
During Ryan’s test, fatigue set in. The challenge became more demanding, and continuing required a decision to push forward instead of stopping. As he worked through that moment, the people around him cheered, “KEEP GOING.”
That encouragement captured the meaning of the entire week.
A black belt does not represent perfection. It represents perseverance. It represents continuing when quitting would be easier. It represents the process of learning, the progress made over time, and the decision to keep showing up.
Ryan’s First-Degree Black Belt is a significant achievement, but it is also part of an ongoing journey. Martial arts continues to provide new lessons, new challenges, and new opportunities to grow.

Congratulations to Every Student Who Tested
I want to congratulate Ryan Fazekas on earning his First-Degree Black Belt. I also want to congratulate every student who tested and earned a new rank this week.
More than 16 adult students completed the requirements to advance. Each student demonstrated commitment by stepping onto the mat and completing a demanding testing process. Every new rank represents work that cannot be reduced to a single day.
I am grateful to all of our students for trusting Impact Family Martial Arts, our instructors, and me as part of their journey. That trust is meaningful. It is a privilege to help students and families pursue their goals, face challenges, and recognize their progress.
The achievement belongs to each student, but it is also supported by training partners, parents, family members, instructors, and the entire Impact community.
